The Space Between Stimulus and Response: Reclaiming Your Power to Choose

“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” — Viktor E. Frankl

Too often, we operate on autopilot—reacting instinctively to stress, conflict, or pressure. But when we pause, even for a brief moment, we create the opportunity to:

  • Shift from reaction to intentional action
  • Replace frustration with clarity and purpose
  • Cultivate personal growth and resilience

Before I became aware of this space between stimulus and response, I too ran on autopilot. My reactive behaviour wasn’t limited to the workplace—it showed up in everyday situations with family, friends, loved ones, and even strangers.

What did that look like?

When I received negative feedback from a supervisor, I would immediately explain myself instead of listening calmly and taking it in first.

In discussions with my mother, I would quickly focus on what she did wrong instead of stepping into her shoes and trying to understand where she was coming from.

If someone cut in front of me in a waiting line, I would raise my voice to be heard rather than pause, notice what was happening in me, and choose a more grounded response.

The space between stimulus and response is where transformation happens. It’s where we reclaim our agency and shape our lives consciously, rather than being governed by habit or circumstance.

And here’s the key: our Body knows.

The next time you feel triggered, shift your attention to your Body. Notice your breath, heartbeat, skin temperature, and the tightness or ease in your muscles. What is your Body trying to tell you?

Take a breath.

Feel your feet on the ground.

Come home to this moment.

Your Body anchors you in the now. It gives you the pause you need to make a conscious choice.

  • How do you create space before responding?
  • Who would you be if you lived your life in that way?
  • What would you be free to do if you came from a place of conscious choice?*
